If you show partiality, you are committing sin.
James’ audience incorrectly saw the law as a series of detached commands. If you keep the law you earn a credit; if you break it you incur a debt. They added up the kept laws and subtracted the broken laws and hoped for a moral credit balance. “For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it” (James 2:10). We all stand parallel under the law because we are all guilty of breaking it. Thankfully, regardless of sin, any person who professes Christ as Savior receives salvation.
